Seen from the Car

I often see this interesting modern church as I am at the traffic lights on North Anderson Drive.

I can't find anything about its design or history, except I suspect it is 1950s.

The church homes the Latter Day Saints or Mormons.

Biograhy of the Month February

February's biography is the simple and delightful 'Three Houses' by Angela Thirkell. This uplifting and beautifully written book tells the childhood memories of artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones' granddaughter as she grows up in an artistic, bohemian family.

The book evokes a joyful past of idyllic villages, seaside trips, eccentric relatives and the beautiful homes mentioned. It's just a happy place to be.

Eccentric Mansion (Part of Seen from the Road).

I went to the NTS Collections Care Course the other day. It is held in the glorious Haddo House, Aberdeenshire but this isn't it.

As I drove up the road near Udny, I glimpsed through the bare trees a bristling, lumpy mass of turrets and towers. Victorian!(Edwardian).

This is Tillycorthie House, built in 1911-12 for James Rollo Duncan, a Bolivian tin magnate. The house is a very early use of concrete and also features a glassed in car courtyard and in the grounds an artificial lake and rooftop skating rink. The building was restored as a home a few years ago, after many sad years used as an agricultural store and is one of the most unusual buildings in Aberdeenshire.
